Darth Maul, later known simply as Maul was a male Zabrak Sith Lord trained by Darth Sidious prior to the Invasion on Naboo. Born in 54 BBY during the era of the Galactic Republic, Maul was the son of Mother Talzin, leader of the Nightsisters of Dathomir. Maul also had two siblings, the Nightbrothers Savage Opress and Feral. Sensing his potential, Sidious took Maul as an apprentice while he was still a child in 40 BBY. Anointed by his Sith Master as Darth Maul, the Dathomirian was raised to hate the Jedi Knights that served the light side of the Force. Desiring to see the Jedi Order fall, Darth Maul trained for the day when the Sith would exact revenge on their ancient foes. The time for revealing the Sith's continued existence to the Jedi came during the Invasion of Naboo, when Darth Maul confronted Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. Though he killed Jinn, Maul was, in turn, defeated by Kenobi, who bisected the Sith assassin at the waist. Darth Maul was believed to be dead in the aftermath of the battle but ultimately survived, emerging a decade after his defeat, during the height of the Clone Wars.
Despite learning that his Master took a new apprentice, Darth Tyranus, Maul still believed that he was a Sith Lord. Taking his brother as an apprentice, Maul and Opress held that they were the true Sith rather than Sidious and Tyranus. He then devised a scheme to seize power on the planet Mandalore, overthrowing the New Mandalorians and installing the Death Watch as the new ruling government. In addition to the Mandalorians, Maul expanded his criminal enterprise, the Shadow Collective, to include the Pyke Syndicate, Black Sun, and the Hutt Clan. However, as his power increased, Maul became a threat to his former Master's plan, resulting in a confrontation that concluded with Opress's demise and Maul's capture by Sidious. He was later rescued by his Death Watch Shadow Collective and continued to plot against the CIS, Republic & Palpatine. The heroic General Grievous was sent to end Maul's villainy but he and Dooku, Sidious' new aperentice, were captured by Maul. Grievous was soon freed by Dooku and regrouped with Sidious to end Maul and Mother Talzin, which Grievous Hero succeeded in killing Talzin leaving Maul upset.
Maul later returned to Mandalore and had a run in with former Jedi Ahsoka Tano when her and Bo-Katan Kryze went to retake Mandalore from him. Maul was captured by Ahsoka and was going to be brought back to the evil Jedi Council, despite the villains not wanting to help Mandalore, but Order 66 happened and Maul soon escaped again. During the Imperial Era, Maul had a new organization called Crimson Dawn. During his conflict with the Jedi fugitives Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger, he was killed by Ben Kenobi - Obi-Wan who turned good.
Trivia[]
- For some odd reason, certain people think Darth Maul is a "hero" similar to Grievous being a hero in TCW. Grievous is a hero in TCW because he did heroic actions and killed zero innocents as a fact! His revenge is heroic and justified because the Jedi slaughtered his innocent Kaleesh people for no reason. Maul's revenge on the other hand, is evil because while he was wounded by the evil Obi-Wan and betrayed by Palpatine, his reasons were petty as Maul killed innocents like the Jedi he hates much like Legends Grievous, another villain out for revenge.
- In Star Wars Battlefront II (2017), Darth Maul is a playable villain for the heroic Confederacy of Independent Systems side which is false due to Maul never working with the CIS as he in fact fought the heroic CIS in Canon. However, this is likely due to the developers thinking the Trade Federation, who Maul worked with as an aide, is the "CIS" when they're not and it's just an excuse to say the CIS are "villains" when they're not. This also happened in the original Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) as Maul was on the CIS side again for no reason.
